Every 10 years, scientists from around the world establish research priorities for the Arctic as part of the Fourth International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP 4).
After two years of intensive work, reports outlining priorities, needs, recommendations, and an implementation plan for research, technology, and logistical operations in the Arctic have been published. These documents will serve as a guide leading up to the upcoming Fifth International Polar Year.

Polish representatives also participated in the work of the Research Priority Teams:
- Research Priority Team 4: Arctic Research Cooperation and Diplomacy:
– Prof. Monika Kusiak (Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences)
– Dr. Monika Szkarłat (Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin) - Research Priority Team 7: Technology, Infrastructure, Logistics, and Services:
– Dr. Dariusz Ignatiuk, co-chair (University of Silesia in Katowice)
– Dr. Marcin Wichorowski (Institute of Oceanology, Polish Academy of Sciences)
